Prestigious Madrid Social Club Co-Presents With Embassy the 450th Founding Anniversary of the City Of Manila

MADRID, 29 November 2021 - The Philippine Embassy in Madrid and Sentro Rizal Madrid were invited by Casino de Madrid, a members-only social club founded in 1836, to highlight the 450th Founding Anniversary of the City of Manila on 23 November 2021.
As part of the Embassy’s Sentro Rizal programming, Ambassador Philippe J. Lhuillier welcomed the opportunity to address members of the club, as well as members of the Filipino Community in an afternoon and evening tertulia, or social event, to discuss Philippine-Spanish relations.
Second Secretary and Consul Monika Kamille Limpo talked about the founding of Manila, which was declared a city by Spanish explorer and former Governor General Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, as well as the city’s present and future prospects.
Professor Ros Costelo of the University of the Philippines and research fellow of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) presented on the shared history of the Philippines and Spain in the past five centuries, stressing that cultural, economic and people-to-people ties continue to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.
The event was moderated by Mr. José Luís Yzaguirre, Director of Foro Diplomacia y Sociedad Civil of Real Casino de Madrid. Joining Ambassador Lhuillier in the panel were Mr. César Navarro, former President of Ateneo de Madrid, and Dr. Carlos Puente, a political and economic analyst.
This was the first time since the onset of the pandemic that the Embassy was invited by the Real Casino de Madrid to feature the Philippines in its program of activities. END
