PH Joins Call for Global Effort to Translate Ocean Knowledge and Ocean Science Solutions into Action

PARIS, 03 December 2021 – Foreign Affairs Acting Undersecretary for Bilateral Relations and ASEAN Affairs Ma. Theresa Lazaro conveyed the Philippines’ unity with other nations in the implementation of the UN Decade at the High-Level segment of the Regional Kickoff Conference of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) for the Western Pacific and its Adjacent Areas.

Undersecretary Lazaro highlighted the need to promote ocean science not just as a multidisciplinary field but as an inter-sectoral one which sustains a healthy and resilient ocean, helps map and protect marine ocean ecosystems, and enhances our understanding of current and potential ocean conditions and their impacts.

She likewise stressed the need to promote ocean literacy among children from an early age and beyond, to take an inclusive and nation-wide approach towards promoting a deeper appreciation and better understanding of the oceans, while emphasizing the need to act now to preserve and protect them for future generations.

“It is our fervent hope that the seven outcomes of the Decade for an ocean we want - a clean, healthy and resilient, productive, predictable, safe, accessible, and inspiring and engaging ocean - can be realized. We all want a “peaceful ocean,” an ocean where conflicts and misunderstandings cannot prosper because we are committed to work hand-in-hand within and across borders and regions. We need to act, and we need to act now,” Undersecretary Lazaro said. END.
