PH Consulate General pursues PH investment, biz interests in Yunnan, China

KUNMING, 02 March 2022 – In line with its economic diplomacy objectives, the Philippine Consulate General in Chongqing met with officials of the Yunnan Department of Commerce, headed by Deputy Director General Cun Min, and representatives of nine Chinese State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), to explore trade and investment opportunities between one of China’s southwest provinces and the Philippines in Kunming, Yunnan on 25 February 2022 .
Philippine Consul General Flerida Ann Camille P. Mayo provided an overview of the Philippine economy and Philippines-China trade and investment relations as well as introduced the priority sectors for foreign investments in the Philippines. A dialogue followed the presentation where Yunnan officials and business representatives shared their company profiles and expressed interest in doing business in the Philippines in areas such as infrastructure and construction, energy and power, and mining.
The SOEs in attendance included: 1) China Yunnan Co., Ltd. (for International Techno-Economic Cooperation); 2) SinoCopper Resources Limited; 3) SinyHydro Bureau 14 Co., Ltd. (for international engineering); 4) Yunnan Provincial Energy Investment Group Co., Ltd.; 5) Power China Kunming Engineering Cooperation Ltd. (for overseas engineering); 6) Construction and Investment Holding Group Co., Ltd.; 7) Yunnan Construction and Investment Holding Group Co., Ltd.; 8) Yunnan Provincial Overseas Investment Co., Ltd.; 9) The 14th Metallurgical Construction Corporation of China Nonferrous Metal Industry; and 9) China Copper Group, Co., Ltd.
The Philippine Consulate General toured the China Copper Group’s Southwest Copper Plant in Kunming on the same day. According to the Plant’s General Manager, Mr. Kong Desong, the Philippines is an important supplier of said industrial metal with China Copper buying 80% of Philippine copper production annually.
“We trust that our latest engagement with the Yunnan Department of Commerce and business sector will open doors to profitable partnerships between the Philippines and Yunnan. We hope that our presentation today will eventually lead to concrete business ventures in the Philippines as an attractive destination for investments from Yunnan province,” the Consul General remarked.
