PH Ambassador Garcia Reaffirms PH Commitment to ICT Development

GENEVA 27 May 2022 – Philippine Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva Ambassador Evan P. Garcia met with Secretary General Houlin Zhao of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) on 27 May 2022 at the ITU Headquarters in Geneva.
During the meeting, Ambassador Garcia conveyed his sincere appreciation for the contributions of Secretary-General Zhao to the ITU as well as the robust cooperation between the ITU and the Philippines through the DICT. The Ambassador also reaffirmed the country’s commitment to Information and Communications Technology (ICT) development.
Secretary-General Zhao shared that he considers the Philippines as a model developing country which, despite the challenges of geography and resources, has made huge strides in the extension of ICT services especially for marginalized sectors.
Secretary-General Zhao wished the Philippines well on its campaign for re-election to the ITU Council for the term 2023-26 at elections to be held in September 2022 in Romania. He added that he has always admired the Philippines’ active participation in the work of the Union.
Ambassador Garcia is scheduled to conclude his assignment in Geneva in 2022. Secretary-General Zhao is also scheduled to step down from his role this year after holding the top ITU post since 2015. END
