GENEVA, 31 May 2022 – The Philippines Missions in Geneva unveiled on 20 May 2022 a grand mural with the theme of the Global Filipino. The Global Filipino mural, which measures an impressive 3.5 meters by 5 meters, was borne from Ambassador Manuel A.J. Teehankee’s idea to collaborate with renowned Filipino artist Mr. Emmanuel “Manny” Garibay’s on the creation of an ambitious artistic centrepiece for the newly-opened Philippine Chancery Building in Geneva.
The formal unveiling was co-hosted by Permanent Representative of the Philippines to the World Trade Organization (WTO) Ambassador Manuel A.J. Teehankee, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Philippines to the UN and other international organizations in Geneva Ambassador Maria Teresa T. Almojuela, and Philippine Consul General to Geneva Felipe F. Cariño III.
In his welcome remarks, Ambassador Teehankee noted that: “The Philippine Chancery Building can serve as a hub for engagement between the Filipino community and International Geneva as well as a forum to promote Filipino culture through the Rizal Library, and in future a possible Sentro Rizal in Geneva.”
In her closing remarks, Ambassador Almojeula highlighted that: “The mural painting is a legacy project by the Missions in Geneva that exhibits the uniqueness, beauty, and complexity of the Philippine art to Filipino and foreign visitors alike and is intended to be strategically displayed in the Mission public area to encourage a sense of pride, joy, and nationalism among our Filipino kababayan who can now call the newly-opened chancery as their home away from the mother country”.
The project was seen to fruition through a multi-faceted partnership between the Philippine Mission to the United Nations (UN), the Philippine Mission to the WTO, the Philippine Consulate General Geneva, Mr. Garibay, the National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCCA), Dr. Francis Chua, Chairman Emeritus of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the International Chamber of Commerce (Philippines) and the Federation of Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, M3 Immobilier, and the DFA’s Office of Asset Management and Support Services (OAMMS).
Mr. Emmanuel Garibay’s work shows a stunning combination of social realism and avant-garde figurative expression, seriousness, humour, sharp social critique, and humane character depiction. What is achieved through his carefully crafted work is effective storytelling of people in scenes of social, political, and religious complexity. END
