UNITED NATIONS, NEW YORK, 18 August 2022 - The Philippines asserted the Philippines’ inalienable right to the peaceful uses of nuclear energy in accordance to Article IV of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) at the Main Committee III meeting of the 10th Review Conference of the NPT on 8 August 2022. As the third pillar of the NPT, peaceful uses make a direct contribution towards the attainment of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Third Secretary Andrea Lynn Lazaro emphasized that the peaceful uses of nuclear energy offer solutions to the world’s most daunting challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, communicable diseases such as monkeypox and dengue, as well as non-communicable diseases such as cancer, among others.
She also highlighted specific nuclear applications used by Filipino scientists to help improve Filipinos’ everyday lives, including in the fields of food and agriculture, health and medicine, industrial applications, environment and natural resources, and energy.

She attached importance to capacity-building and expressed appreciation to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for deploying nuclear science and technology to developing countries, including the Philippines, through its Technical Cooperation (TC) Program.
While recognizing the challenges in gaining public acceptance of the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, she underscored that the best way to promote a positive perception of nuclear technology is the total elimination of nuclear weapons once and for all.
