PASAY CITY 22 September 2022 ⧿ On the occasion of the 212th Anniversary of the Independence of the United Mexican States, DFA Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs Eduardo José A. de Vega participated as the guest of honor at the national day reception hosted by Mexican Ambassador to PH Gerardo Lozano Arredondo, held at the Manila Diamond Hotel on 15 September 2022.
Undersecretary De Vega underscored the shared history, common heritage and culture, through the Manila-Acapulco Galleon trade, that helped establish the strong links between PH and Mexico. He noted that this free trade mechanism shaped the cultural exchanges and identities of the two nations. He also recalled the heroic contribution of the Mexican Squadron 201, otherwise known as the Aztec Eagles, who fought alongside the Filipino soldiers, as brothers, during World War II, to fight for peace and freedom.
Ambassador Lozano noted that diplomatic relations with the Philippines, established in 1953, has continued to grow in the political, economic and cultural arenas, based on mutual respect and shared values. He expressed Mexico’s commitment to further enhance cooperative ties as both countries gear towards the celebration of the 70 years of diplomatic relations next year and highlighted the importance of increasing bilateral trade and investments for the inclusive, sustainable development of both countries.
The Ambassador, likewise, presided over the ceremonial ringing of the bell which signals the start of the independence celebrations. The bell ceremony, referred to as the “grito de Dolores”, celebrated annually for over 200 years, re-enacts the compelling cry of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla urging the Mexicans to rise up against colonial rule.
The festive occasion demonstrated both the Philippines and Mexico’s commitment to working together closely to elevate bilateral relations to new heights and broaden cooperation in areas of mutual interest. END
