UNITED NATIONS NEW YORK 23 September 2022 - At a meeting with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. underscored the United Nations’ important role in promoting international peace and security and harnessing international cooperation to address global challenges, especially climate change.

Recalling that the Philippines was a founding member of the UN, President Marcos noted the country’s active role in the work of the organization throughout the years, and that the Philippines adheres to this day to the ideals and purposes upon which the organization was founded.

The President expressed his intent to strengthen the Philippines’ engagement in UN peacekeeping operations, the organization’s flagship program.

Secretary-General Guterres thanked the Philippines for its many contributions to the United Nations over the years and up to today. He said he looked forward to the Philippines playing an even more active role in the United Nations, including in its peacekeeping operations.

Philippine participation in UN peacekeeping operations demonstrates the enduring commitment of the country to work with key actors to ensure international peace and stability. Filipino peacekeepers have served in 21 peacekeeping missions over the past 60 years. The Philippines currently has nine peacekeepers deployed in UN peacekeeping operations in South Sudan, the Central African Republic, and India and Pakistan.
