VIENNA, 30 September 2022 – The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Renato Solidum, Jr. led the Philippine delegation to the 66th International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference held from 26 to 30 September 2022 in Vienna. He was joined by representatives from the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute and the Philippine Permanent Mission in Vienna.

Sec. Solidum delivered the Philippine national statement highlighting various peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology in the areas of food, agriculture, natural resources, environment, human health and nutrition, all of which contribute to Philippine socio-economic development. 

Sec. Solidum also met with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi to discuss cooperation on peaceful nuclear applications, served as speaker during the side event on Nuclear Technology for Controlling Plastic Pollution (NUTEC Plastics), and joined other Ministers from the Asia Pacific region in celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Regional Cooperative Agreement for Research, Development and Training Related to Nuclear Science and Technology (RCA). The Conference also saw the signing of a Country Programme Framework that identifies priority areas for technical cooperation between the Philippines and the IAEA for the period of 2022-2027.

He also attended the Scientific Forum on “Rays of Hope: Cancer Care for All”, an IAEA initiative that seeks to provide patients, especially those in the developing world, access to diagnosis and treatment of cancer using radiation medicine. The Philippines is the pen-holder of the IAEA resolution “Programme of Action for Cancer Therapy (PACT),” tabled by the Group of 77 and China. END
