JAKARTA 24 October 2022 — Students and faculty of the Film Department of the Bina Nusantara (BINUS) University Alam Sutera Campus joined other Indonesians and a number of foreign nationals in the screening of the Filipino film “Sonata”, starring the late multi-awarded actress Cherie Gil, at the BINUS University auditorium on 15 October 2022.

BINUS lecturers and filmmakers Ms. Azalia Muchransyah and Ms. Devina Sofiyanti led a post-film discussion tackling the artistic, cinematographic, and opera-related elements of the film with Indonesian students noting the many cultural similarities between Filipinos and Indonesians and offering their appreciation of the countryside feel of Bacolod City depicted in the movie.

Directed by Peque Gallaga and Lore Reyes, “Sonata” follows the life of a fallen opera diva who worked in Europe now on the verge of a nervous breakdown after losing her voice. She goes into self-exile, only to meet a young boy who dares to hopefully reinvigorate her back to her senses.

Released in 2013, “Sonata” garnered more than twenty nominations in various film category awards including winning accolades such as Best Actress at the ASEAN International Film Festival and Awards 2015, Best Music at the Gawad Urian Awards 2014, and Indie Movie Production Designer of the Year at the Star Awards for Movies 2014

Around 180 students and Filipino community members in Jakarta attended the Embassy event on-site and online (via Zoom). END
