MEXICO CITY, 29 September 2022 – Philippine Ambassador to France and Permanent Delegate of the Philippines to UNESCO Junever M. Mahilum-West delivered the opening remarks during the Philippine-led high-level side event of the MONDIACULT 2022 entitled "Data collection and measurement of culture towards evidence-based policies for sustainable development", co-organized with the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), with the support of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Centre (WHC) on 29 September 2022.
“Today, we are united with a common goal: to put a spotlight on culture and its role in building a sustainable world.”
The Ambassador invited the Ministers/representatives of the Ministries of Culture of Colombia (H.E. Patricia Ariza Flórez), Burkina Faso (H.E. Valérie Kaboré), Romania (H.E. Lucian Romașcanu), Morocco (H.E. Mohammed Mehdi Bensaid), as well as Baguio City Mayor Benjie Magalong, to share their experiences and best practices during the implementation of the UNESCO Culture 2030 Indicators Project, a framework of thematic indicators which aims to measure and monitor the progress of culture’s enabling contribution to the national and local implementation of the Agenda 2030-Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Philippines, through the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), is one of the pilot countries that took part in the UNESCO Culture 2030 Indicators Project in 2021 and designated the City of Baguio (the country’s UNESCO Creative City for Crafts and FolkArt) as a pilot site for the execution of the UNESCO Culture 2030 Indicators Project.
The high-level side event, graced by the presence of UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Culture Ernest Ottone, illustrated how data on culture can inform policies, address the challenges of sustainable development, and demonstrate the added value of culture for tackling global concerns such as climate change, reducing extreme poverty, boosting employment, and promoting the well-being of communities.
The event was held at the sidelines of the UNESCO World Conference on Cultural Policies and Sustainable Development — MONDIACULT 2022 in Mexico City. END
