PH Embassy Hails National Teams Scoring Back-to-Back Wins in Jordan
Philippine National Men's Basketball Team Gilas Pilipinas and Tokyo Olympian Carlo Paalam showed their prowess before the crowd in Amman, Jordan in their respective matches.
AMMAN, 15 November 2022 — The Philippine Embassy in Jordan, led by Chargé d’ Affaires, a.i. Angeli A. Payumo, proudly joins the nation in celebrating the back-to-back wins of the Philippine National Teams in basketball and in boxing matches held in the capital city of Amman, last 10 November and 12 November, respectively.
The first win came as Gilas Pilipinas handed Jordan its first home court loss since September 2018 in the Window 5 match for the FIBA World Cup 2023 Qualifiers on 10 November with a final score of 74-66. Tokyo Olympian Carlo Paalam followed with a gold medal after beating Kazakhstan’s Makhmud Sabyrkhan via split decision in the Men’s 54-kg Bantamweight class of the ASBC Asian Elite Men and Women Boxing Championships 2022 on 12 November.
Gilas’ Thursday win against the Jordan Falcons also raised its team standing as the Philippines prepares to host the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 together with Japan and Indonesia.
Tokyo Olympian Nesthy Petecio and fellow National Boxing Team member Hergie Tao-Wag Bacyadan also scored two more wins for the country with their bronze finish in the Women's Featherweight 57-kg class, and Women's Middleweight 75-kg division, respectively. The Philippine National Boxing Team had been in Jordan since October 14 for a two-week training prior to the tournament.
The Philippine Embassy and the Filipino community in Jordan were in full force as they came out to support the Philippine teams who brought pride and joy to the nation.
