PRAGUE, 29 October 2022 – Philippine Embassy in Prague Chargé d’affaires Indhira C. Bañares congratulated Filipino filmmakers for the largest retrospective of Philippine documentary films outside the country at the Industry Night in Honor of the Philippines that was held as part of the 26th edition of the Ji.hlva International Documentary Film Festival (JIDFF) at the Industry Hub of Vysoká škola polytechnická Jihlava on 28 October 2022.

As the feature country of the JIDFF’s Transparent Landscape, the Philippines screened 41 documentary films during the week-long festival that was attended by an estimated 40,000 viewers, more than a thousand film professionals, and hundreds of journalists from around the world.

CDA Bañares recognized the research of the JIDFF and Filipino filmmaker and professor Nick de Ocampo that led to the discovery of the 1913 film Native Life in the Philippines as possibly the earliest feature-length documentary in world cinematic history, thus far.

Mr. Tirso Cruz III, Chair of the Film Development Council of the Philippines, also delivered a message through a recorded video. The FDCP was a major partner of this year’s JIDFF.

Earlier in the day, CDA Bañares led the Embassy personnel in a luncheon meet and greet with the Philippine delegation to the film festival: Prof. Nick de Ocampo, National Artist Kidlat Tahimik, Lav Diaz, Kiri Dalena, Khavn dela Cruz, Katrin de Guia, Lolita Arboleda, RoxLee.

Held annually in October, the JIDFF is one of the leading documentary film festivals in Europe. END
