COPENHAGEN, 24 November 2022 – Philippine Ambassador to Denmark Leo Herrera-Lim, together with officers and staff of the Embassy in Copenhagen, met with Amager Resource Center’s (ARC) Flemming Nielsen for a tour of Amager Bakke (also known as Copehill), one of the world's cleanest and most energy-efficient waste-to-energy plants, on 14 November 2022.

The energy plant is one of the landmarks of Copenhagen redefining the relationship between the waste plant and the city by integrating an urban recreation center with a ski slope, hiking trail and climbing wall, embodying Copenhagen’s goal of becoming the world’s first carbon-neutral city.

In 2021, Amager Bakke converted 600,000 tonnes of residual waste into electricity enough to supply power for 80,000 households (244 GWh) and district heating for 90,000 apartments (1,363 GWh). Compared to traditional methods of waste disposal, the plant emits 75% less CO2 than a landfill.

Ambassador Herrera-Lim shared Philippine practices in waste management. He extended his appreciation to ARC for the tour which underscored the importance of having a comprehensive waste management program including courses for waste sorting in schools, private and public institutions for a waste-to-energy model to work.
