NEW DELHI 14 December 2022 — The Philippine Embassy in New Delhi participated in the ASEAN-India Music Festival on 18-20 November 2022 at the historic Purana Qila (Old Fort) in New Delhi.

The event, organized by India’s Ministry of External Affairs in collaboration with Seher management, aimed to “foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of the music and artistic traditions as well as promote cultural exchange between ASEAN and India.” It gathered highly-acclaimed bands from the ten ASEAN countries and India, performing masterpieces in a fusion of indigenous and rock music.

The Philippines was represented by the group Bayang Barrios at Ang Naliyagan. The group, led by the seasoned and award-winning artist Miss Bayang Barrios, had the honor of opening the third and final day of the music festival. They dazzlingly rendered four songs in Tagalog with a sprinkling of Bisaya and another indigenous language from Barrios’s province of Agusan Del Sur. Indigenous musical instruments like the kulintang and kudyapi were likewise introduced by the band to the crowd of locals and members of the Diplomatic Corps. Besides showcasing their prowess in music, the band also donned their traditional Manobo/Minadanaoan attire, which made their performances even more captivating.

Aside from the Bayang Barrios at Ang Naliyagan, the other performers from ASEAN included Empty Wallet from Brunei Darussalam, RizerXSuffer from Cambodia, Riau Rhythm from Indonesia, Lao Traditional Music Troupe from Lao-PDR, Instamuzika from Malaysia, MRTV Modern Music band from Myanmar, Lin Ying from Singapore, Makaohang from Thailand, and Tri Minh’s Quartet from Vietnam; while Indian performers included Faridkot and Amar Jalal, Jonita Gandhi, Papon, Raghav Meattle, and Sukhbir.

The music festival was graced by Meenakshi Lekhi, India’s Minister of State for External Affairs and Culture, and other members of the Diplomatic Corps in New Delhi. Toward the end of the event, Minister Lekhi addressed the crowd, underscoring ASEAN and India’s long partnership, which dates back since time immemorial. She highlighted that ASEAN and India have common civilizational bonds and that the event aptly celebrates their friendship. She also noted that the music festival commemorates the 30th Anniversary of the ASEAN-India relationship. END
