ROME, 10 November 2022 – The Philippine Embassy in Rome opened an exhibit entitled, “Habi at Palamuti: A Glimpse of Philippine Traditional Weaves and Designs,” at the Social Hall of the Embassy on 28 October 2022, in celebration of the “National Indigenous Peoples Thanksgiving Day” in the Philippines on 29 October 2022, pursuant to Proclamation 486, s. 2003.

The exhibit, which lasted until 09 November 2022, is in celebration of Proclamation 1906, s. 2009 (National Indigenous Peoples Month), which aims to honor the country’s indigenous cultural communities and indigenous peoples (ICCs/IPs) in the Philippines, and Proclamation No. 138, s. 1949 or United Nations Day. The display showcased sustainable fibers made from plant and nature-based resources, as well as indigenous and cultural materials, accessories and handicrafts, throughout Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

The exhibit was visited by Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Ma. Esperanza Christina Garcia Frasco and her delegation during their visit to the Embassy on 10 November 2022. Secretary Frasco and her delegation were in Rome from 08 to 11 November 2022 as part of their Listening Tour where they met and consulted with the industry stakeholders to enhance Philippine’s market presence and product positioning in Italy.

Also promoting Philippine cuisine, the Embassy served Filipino snacks (purple yam and cassava cakes) and distributed native giveaways (i.e., beaded lanyards, necklaces with shell pendant, embroidered face masks, and woven pouches and coin purses) to some guests.

The Embassy notes there are untapped opportunities for closer cooperation in the fashion industry, especially because of the sustainable materials trend. It has initially reached out to the National Museum to bring the Hibla ng Lahing Filipino Traveling Exhibition to Italy, during the year-long 75th anniversary celebration. END
