ASEAN Ambassadors visit Madrid Mayor

MADRID, 27 February 2023 – Philippine Ambassador to Spain Philippe J. Lhuillier joins the other Ambassadors/Heads of Mission from Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam in meeting with Mayor Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida of Madrid on 22 February 2023 to discuss possible collaboration between the group and the city government.

As Chair of the ASEAN Committee in Madrid (ACM), the Ambassador Akmal Che Mustafa of Malaysia talked about ASEAN and ACM’s objective to promote ASEAN interests and identity in Spain. Ambassador Lhuillier thanked the Mayor for receiving them and for the efforts of the local government that benefit the residents of Madrid which is home to the most number of Filipinos in Spain.

For the rest of the meeting, ACM made various proposals to collaborate with the city government such as the holding of an ASEAN Festival, which could include the promotion of ASEAN food and culture, sister-city arrangements with the respective ASEAN Members and an ASEAN Corner in one of the public parks of Madrid.

The Mayor and his staff replied that they will study the proposals and possible places to hold the ASEAN activities and would organize meetings with the Embassies accordingly. END
