GENEVA, 01 March 2023 – The Philippines renewed its commitment to support the United Nations in responding to the humanitarian crisis and sustaining aid operations in Yemen, during Yemen Conference 2023: High-level Pledging Event for the Humanitarian Crisis in Yemen held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland on 27 February 2023.
During the event, Secretary for Foreign Affairs Enrique A. Manalo announced a fresh pledge of USD100,000.00 to support the Yemen Humanitarian Fund.
The Philippines has been a consistent donor to the Yemen Humanitarian Fund, a country-based pooled fund managed by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
“For the past five years, the Philippines has responded to the call of the United Nations and the international community for funding to address the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, over and above our contribution to the Central Emergency Response Fund,“ Secretary Manalo stated.
Secretary Manalo said that the Philippines’ voluntary contribution demonstrates the country’s advocacy for people-centered intervention in crises. “Filipinos are one with the people of Yemen, especially those in most need of our help and those in vulnerable situations, including women and children, migrants, older persons, and persons with disabilities,“ Secretary Manalo continued.
Secretary Manalo also deplored the civilian casualties and displacement resulting from years of protracted conflict in Yemen. He expressed the Philippines support and cooperation in the common endeavor to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in the country.
UN Secretary-General Mr. António Guterres, Yemen Prime Minister Dr. Maeen Abdulmalik Saeed, Switzerland Federal Councillor Mr. Ignazio Cassis, Sweden Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Mr. Johan Forssell, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Mr. Martin Griffiths, and other high-level officials participated in the event.
