AMMAN 23 March 2023 — The Philippine Embassy in Jordan, led by Ambassador Wilfredo Santos, took part in UN Women Jordan’s 11th Edition of Women's Film Week in celebration of the 2023 International Women’s Day, under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Basma bint Talal in partnership with The Royal Film Commission Jordan. The Embassy’s participation was made possible through its collaboration with the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) under their Philippine Embassies Assistance Program (PEAP).

The Philippine entry, Halawod, is a 2021 documentary by Anna Katrina V. Tejero which tells the story of the indigenous people of the Tumandok tribe of Panay, a region in the Philippines, who are struggling to preserve their culture and their rights to ancestral land.

The documentary explores the sentiments of the Tumandok people facing dispossession of their land and the waning of cultural tradition that is brought about by modernization and development. In her introduction prior to the screening, Third Secretary and Vice Consul Angeli Payumo also highlighted how the documentary serves as a depiction of democracy in the country as it showed strong-willed Filipino women continuously taking their roles in social conversations and how these conversations are aimed at building a workable solution to the problems at hand.

Taking this year’s theme of "DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality”, the film week ran from March 13 to 18, 2023 at the Rainbow Theater in Amman. The event featured a total of 13 films and documentaries from various countries. END
