PH Reiterates Support for Revitalization Efforts in UN General Assembly

UNITED NATIONS, NEW YORK, 223 March 2023 — Philippine Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Antonio M. Lagdameo expressed support for the revitalization efforts pursued by the President of the UN General Assembly to make the world body deliver more effectively for Member States on 20 March 2023.

Ambassador Lagdameo stated this during the ASEAN Committee in New York dinner meeting with Csaba Kőrösi, President of the 77th Session of the UN General Assembly, on 17 March 2023 at the Indonesian Mission to the UN in New York.

“The President of the General Assembly plays a strategic role within the United Nations organization…and the Philippines reiterates its support for strengthening the accountability, transparency and institutional memory of the Office of the President of the General Assembly (OPGA),” Ambassador Lagdameo said.

The Ambassador added that as part of the revitalization process, the Philippines will support efforts to provide adequate human and financial resources to the OPGA, including the creation of a permanent core staff for the OPGA in view of the growing number of mandates entrusted to it by the General Assembly.

The General Assembly established an ad hoc working group on the revitalization process to identify ways to further enhance its role, authority, effectiveness, efficiency and working methods. The working group has been discussing proposals on how to strengthen the accountability, transparency and institutional memory of the OPGA.

The ASEAN New York Committee is composed of Ambassadors and Permanent Representatives of ASEAN Member States accredited to the UN in New York. END
