Sentro Rizal – Ottawa Hosts Sayawan – Philippine Folk Dance Workshop

OTTAWA 30 March 2023 — The Sentro Rizal – Ottawa hosted Sayawan: Philippine Folk Dance Workshop on 25 March 2023 at the chancery’s Mindanao Hall.

The workshop is a collaboration of the Filipino Students Association of the University of Ottawa (FilSAUO) and Carleton University Filipino Students’ Association (CUFSA), with the Philippine Dance Troupe of Ottawa (PDTO).

Philippine Ambassador to Canada Maria Andrelita S. Austria welcomed the joint initiatives of the Filipino-Canadian youth and established cultural organizations in Ottawa to promote Filipino culture and heritage. Ambassador Austria added that this workshop was a welcome opportunity to increase awareness and cultivate a lasting interest in Philippine arts and culture among the youth in Ottawa.

The participants from FilSAUO and CUFSA immersed themselves in the diversity, uniqueness and richness of Philippine performing arts as they learned traditional dances of Tinikling, Binasuan, and Pandanggo sa Ilaw from PDTO Alumni and its lead choreographer, Ms. Vanessa Gomez, joined by PDTO’s young members.
