MEXICO 17 April 2023 — The Embassy of the Philippines in Mexico led by Ambassador-designate Lilybeth R. Deapera witnessed the illumination of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico on 13 April 2023.

Representing the Mexican side were the Ministry's Director General for Asia Pacific Fernando González Saiffe and Mexican Ambassador-designate to the Philippines Daniel Hernández Joseph.

The event served as a kickstart to the year-long celebration of the 70th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Mexico established on 14 April 1953.

Both countries share deep historical and cultural affinities. During the Spanish occupation, the Philippines was under the administration of the ViceRoyalty of New Spain based in Mexico from 1565 until the latter’s independence from Spain in 1821.  It was also during this time when products and cultural influences were being exchanged between the two countries through the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade.

At present, the Philippines considers Mexico as an important bilateral partner in the Americas.  With more than 10 agreements signed, the Philippines hopes to further strengthen relations with Mexico through increased engagement in the bilateral and multilateral fora. END
