VANCOUVER 19 April 2023 — Two Filipino fashion designers, Jobert Cristobal and Chynna Mamawal, were featured at the Vancouver Fashion Week (VFW) Fall-Winter 2023 Show held at the David Lam Hall in Vancouver, British Columbia from 12 to 16 April 2023.

Since its conception in 2001, VFW has been dedicated to cultivating the success of both established designers and award-winning emerging designers with its global perspective and highly multicultural approach.  Currently, it is also the second largest fashion week in North America and continues to grow as the fastest growing fashion week in the world.

Jobert John Cristobal, a graduate of Technological University of the Philippines, is an emerging young Filipino fashion designer who has a flair for fusing various cultures through his works. He combines local Filipino fabrics with Ankara prints, fabrics from Africa. His fascination in using Ankara prints and exploring African culture is derived from the experiences of his elder sister, Jas Cristobal, who is working in Nigeria as an Overseas Filipino Worker.  For the VFW, his first international fashion show, he takes inspiration from the colorful jeepney. His collection is a unique combination of color, structure and texture and his modern take on the traditional terno was a sure hit among the fashionistas who attended the VFW.

Meanwhile, Chynna Mamawal is a young designer who set out to show off the beauty of Filipino art with her Fall-Winter 2023 Red Carpet Collection. She incorporated intricate beadwork with luxurious silhouettes in her Philippine fashion designs that exuded elegance and confidence on stage.  Her international debut at the VFW showcased a compilation of her legacies through artistic sheer, intricate beadwork, and outstanding tailoring.

The officers and staff of the Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver, led by Consul General Arlene T. Magno, attended the event, and gave support to the participation of the Filipino designers. END
