MEXICO 25 April 2023 — The Embassy of the Philippines in Mexico in partnership with the Matías Romero Institute of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) conducted a lecture on the overview of Philippines-Mexico relations on 17 April 2023.
The panel included Philippine Ambassador-designate to Mexico Lilybeth R. Deapera; Director General for Asia Pacific Fernando González Saiffe; Mexican Ambassador-designate to the Philippines Daniel Hernández Joseph; and Dr. Ivan Valdez-Bubnov, the academic coordinator and point of contact of the Philippine Studies Program in UNAM.
Ambassador Deapera gave a general overview of the Philippines and on the current state of its relations with Mexico. She highlighted their significant political, economic and socio-cultural engagements throughout the seven decades of diplomatic relations, including the utilization of a bilateral consultation mechanism and the agreements signed.
Dr. Valdéz-Bubnov focused on maritime relations established by the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade and its contribution to globalization. The route created in 1565 and ended in 1815 was a key event in Mexico-Asia relations as it opened commercialization and facilitated exchange in knowledge, technology and culture.
Director General González discussed the Mexican priorities to further strengthen diplomatic relations in the next 70 years. These include promotion of people-to-people exchange, increasing trade and investment, and deepening of political ties in the bilateral and multilateral fora.
Ambassador Hernández elaborated on the presentations and offered insights on possible strategies to achieve the aforementioned goals. As part of his mandate, he committed to working on the conclusion of pending bilateral agreements and to fully utilize those that were already signed.
The hybrid event was conducted in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Mexico. It was attended by at least 80 participants from the diplomatic corps, the SRE, the representatives of Mexican States in Mexico City, members of the academe and the Filipino Community. END
