BARCELONA, 02 May 2023 – The Philippines' presence in the Seafood Expo 2023 in Barcelona was a huge success as it brought together 15 Filipino companies under one roof, showcasing the best of the country's seafood industry. The event was held from 25-27 April 2023, at the FIRA Gran Via Exhibition Centre in Barcelona.

The Philippine delegation was led by Undersecretary Drusila Bayate, with the Philippine Consul General to Barcelona Maria Theresa S.M. Lazaro, Consul Raisa Mabayo, Agriculture Attache Kristine Yap, and joined by officials from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).

The Philippine pavilion, designed to look like the traditional bahay kubo, occupied a prime spot in the exhibition hall, where attendees were able to experience the Philippines' unique seafood offerings and learn more about the country's industry. Philippine companies had the opportunity to display their products and pitch their services to a global market, as well as network with other professionals in the industry and connect with potential clients, distributors, and suppliers.

The Philippines' participation in the event is expected to yield significant returns for the country’s seafood industry, with initial projections estimated to be in the billions. The Philippine government's presence at the event also paved the way for possible collaborations with Catalan institutions, touching on the sharing of best practices of the industry, lessons in navigating international regulations, keeping up-to-date with industry changes and the latest in research and development.

Meanwhile, Philippine company Fisher Farms was named one of the finalists in the retail category at the Seafood Excellence Global Awards

The Philippine delegation's strong showing in the Seafood Expo 2023 highlights the country's commitment to showcase the best of Philippine seafood to the global market. It is also in line with  President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.’s mandate to prioritize food security.

Besides the seafood expo, the Philippine Consulate in Barcelona has also been strengthening its network in Catalonia, one of Europe’s key agri-food hubs. “We are very happy with the success of the Philippine delegation at the Seafood Expo, and look forward to learning the specific gains for Philippine companies in a few months’ time. We will continue to push for the Philippines’ participation in food and agriculture-related expos in Barcelona, find opportunities for the Philippines in our jurisdiction, and facilitate partnerships between Catalan and Philippine companies,” said Consul General Lazaro.

The Philippines' participation in the Seafood Expo 2023 in Barcelona has undoubtedly boosted the country's image as a key player in the seafood industry, and the Philippine government is optimistic that the event's success will lead to even more opportunities for the Philippines in the near future.
