Pinoy Fiesta Activities held in Surabaya to celebrate National Heritage Month

EAST JAVA, 05 May 2023 – The Philippine Embassy in Jakarta marked National Heritage Month with the Filipino community in Surabaya, East Java in an activity featuring traditional games with Filipino food – a palarong Pinoy cum fiesta event organized by the community in collaboration with Sentro Rizal Jakarta.
Hearkening the days of the pistang nayon in rural communities, Ambassador Gina A. Jamoralin opened the well-attended event with community members trying their best in playing sungka, piko, pabitin, tumbang preso, as well as hampas palayok in a fun-filled day which also featured a bazaar showcasing various Philippine cultural items and Pinoy food products.
In her welcome remarks, the Ambassador mentioned the Philippines-Indonesia Memorandum of Understanding on Cultural Cooperation signed during the State Visit of President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos, Jr. on 5 September 2023. She encouraged the community to contribute on implementing this cultural partnership with the Republic of Indonesia, and take the initiative to engage the Indonesian community in the area, including the local government, businesses, and counterpart associations, in various avenues that showcase our rich national heritage in creative arts, language, performing arts, music, film and cuisine when opportunities arise.
The month of May each year is celebrated as National Heritage Month by virtue of Proclamation No. 439 s.2003 signed on 11 Aug 2003 by then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. The theme for this year’s commemoration is “Heritage: Change and Continuity”. END
