OSLO, 26 May 2023 – The Philippine Ambassador to Norway Enrico T. Fos met with the International Organization for Migrants (IOM) Chief of Mission in Norway Fumiko Nagano on 24 May 2023 to discuss possible areas of collaboration to advance the rights and welfare of Filipino migrants in Norway.
Among the issues discussed were the Philippine Embassy’s position on the proposed abolition of the Au pair system in Norway, and possible ways to assist affected Filipino Au pairs, as well as working conditions of Filipino seasonal workers deployed in huge Norwegian farms.
Chief of Mission Nagano highlighted the IOM’s Voluntary Assisted Return Programme (VARP), to provide assistance to those migrants without legal right to stay in Norway and planning to return voluntarily to their home countries in an organized, safe and dignified manner. She also made mention of IOM’s upcoming project to provide Pre-Departure Orientation Seminar (PDOS) to would-be engineers who will be working in big Lithium Battery manufacturers in the northern Norwegian region.
