Impact of Manila Galleon and Spice Route on Maritime Trade Highlighted at  Jakarta Maritime Museum Festival

JAKARTA, 30 May 2023 – Philippine Ambassador-designate to Indonesia Gina A. Jamoralin delivered a lecture last 20 May on the “Manila Galleon and the Spice Route”, which is part of the on-going Story of the City Festival (Festival Cerita Kota) of the Museum Bahari Jakarta. 

Ambassador Jamoralin joined Mexican Ambassador to Indonesia H.E. Armando G. Alvarez, former EU Ambassador H.E. Juan Carlos Rey Salgado, and Mr. Anton Wibisono, Technical Expert from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology in discussing perspectives and impact of the Manila Galleon and the spice route before a sizeable crowd of Indonesian students, foreign embassy representatives, and museum visitors. Attendees were treated to a small sampling of ‘lumpia’ and food sampler from Philippine companies in Indonesia (PT Liwayway and PT URC Indonesia) as tokens of appreciation. 

Organized by the Indonesian Hidden Heritage Creative Hub in partnership with the Museum Bahari Jakarta collaborating with the Cultural Office of the Jakarta City Government, and the embassies of Spain, Mexico, and the Philippines, the special event this month of May highlights the role of the Manila Galleon in maritime trade connecting the continents of Europe, the Americas, and Asia, along with the spices from the Maluku Islands (Moluccas) as one of the leading commodities in the period.
