MILAN, 05 June 2023 - The Philippine Consulate General in Milan, in cooperation with the Film Development Council of the Philippines, launched Sinehan sa Konsulado, a monthly film showing at the Consulate, on 28 May at the Sentro Rizal Audio Visual Room of the Consulate General.

In celebration of May as the National Heritage Month, the Sinehan sa Konsulado screened Lauren Sevilla Faustino’s “Ang Babae sa Likod ng Mambabatok,” a documentary film that features the life of the legendary tattoo artist Whang-Od, who was conferred the Dangal ng Haraya Award for Intangible Cultural Heritage by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts in 2018.

The screening attracted a diverse audience of community members, who also availed themselves of the Serbisyo Linggo sa Konsulado, a once-a-month Sunday service intended to accommodate kababayans who find it difficult to go to the Consulate for consular services during the regular work week or who are located in distant areas.

The documentary focused on Whang-Od’s life journey in her community and her profound impact on the lives of others. One member of the community who attended the event shared his own personal journey to see Whang-Od and showed his tattoo which was started by Whang-Od and subsequently finished by her grandniece and apprentice, Grace Palicas.

Refreshments were provided during the screening, ensuring the comfort and enjoyment of the attendees. END
