GUANGZHOU, 10 May 2023 – The Philippine Consulate General in Guangzhou held the inauguration of its new office on 09 May 2023.
The inauguration was graced by Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Antonio Morales, Philippine Ambassador to China Jaime FlorCruz, Consul General Louis Alferez, Guangdong Foreign Affairs Office Inspector Luo Jun, and Guangdong International Building General Manager Yue Xiaolong.
In his keynote speech, Undersecretary Morales underscored that the “new and improved office attests to the Department of Foreign Affairs’ commitment to President Marcos’ vision of meaningful functional, economic, cultural and people-to-people engagement with our Chinese friends, and our drive to continually improve the services we extend to our various consular clients in China.”
Ambassador FlorCruz remarked that the "bigger space suits the needs of the Consulate as it carries out its mandate and serve the public, [and continue] as a hub of economic cooperation, sister-city and sister-province arrangements, and people-to- people exchanges."
Inspector Luo meanwhile assured that the Philippines and China “will stay good neighbors helping each other, good relatives sharing affinity, and good partners pursuing win-win cooperation.”
Now occupying the entire 21st floor of the Guangdong International Building in Yuexiu District, Guangzhou, the new office was designed by China-based Filipino architects, Carl and Jaja Bocobo, highlighting a contemporary but distinctly Filipino vibe.
Apart from the formal ribbon-cutting and the keynote remarks, the ceremony included the unveiling of a huge triptych art piece donated by Fil-Estilo, a group of Filipino artists based in Guangdong Province, at the lobby of the Philippine Consulate General.
At least 80 distinguished guests from the consular corps, local provincial and municipal government officials, business executives and Filipino community members also attended the event.
The Philippine Consulate General in Guangzhou was established in March 1997. It celebrated its 25thanniversary last year. The new office represents only its third transfer of premises in the last two decades, largely driven by rapidly expanding visa and consular transactions, and intensifying economic and public diplomacy work.
