PH Consulate General in Frankfurt and City of Bad Durkheim Hosts Farewell Event for Philippine Delegation to Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023

BAD DURKHEIM 19 June 2023 – In a simple ceremony held at the Bad Dürkheim city hall, Mayor Christoph Glogger led city officials and community members in bidding farewell to the members of the Philippine delegation who will be participating in the Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023. Six Filipino athletes will be participating in aquatics, athletics and bocce.
The 17-member Special Olympics Pilipinas composed of athletes, coaches and volunteers led by Head of Delegation and former Philippine Olympian and 8-time gold medalist Akiko Thomson-Guevara arrived in Frankfurt, Germany last 12 June and have been staying in the city of Bad Dürkheim in Rhineland-Palatinate until 15 June under the Host Town Program 2023.
During their 3-day stay in Bad Dürkheim, the Philippine delegates participated in the torch run, city rally and fun games organized by the city government in coordination with Lebenshilfe e.V., a non-government organization assisting people with handicap and disabilities.
At the farewell ceremony, the delegates were given the opportunity to sign the “golden book”, the 100-year-old guest book of the city of Bad Dürkheim. The city is proud to have hosted the Philippine delegation and introduce them to German culture, added Mayor Glogger.
In her message during the farewell event, Consul General Marie Yvette Banzon Abalos thanked Mayor Glogger and city officials, partners, volunteers and local community of Bad Dürkheim for the warm welcome and hosting of the Philippine delegation.
The Special Olympics World Games 2023 which takes place on 17-25 June in Berlin is the world’s largest inclusive sporting event. More than 7,000 athletes with intellectual and multiple disabilities will showcase their abilities and compete in 26 events which are held every four years. END
