PRAGUE 29 June 2023 — The Philippine exhibition “Magbigay Ayon sa Kakayahan, Kumuha Batay sa Pangangailangan” (Give what you can, take what you need) won the Intercultural Exchange award in the Student Exhibition at the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space (PQ 2023) in an awarding ceremony held on 13 June 2023.

The jurors cited the Philippine exhibition for “skillfully bringing people together in a joyful intercultural exchange of ‘knowledge’ and ‘gestures of care’ and reminds us of the importance of holding space for one another in a world that’s in desperate need for compassion.”

In line with PQ 2023’s main theme “RARE: art springing out of ideas, materials, artistic approaches, and design practices that connect to the human level from within one’s environment,” the Philippine exhibition featured a makeshift community pantry of local goods and reproduction of artworks in postcards that the audience can get copies of in exchange for whatever they feel like giving; a karaoke system to channel the celebration of such solidarity and hospitality as seen in common Filipino gatherings; and an inflatable air dancer as a metaphor for promoting courage and optimism. The concept was based on Ana Patricia Non’s community pantry movement in the Philippines in 2021.

A team from De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde curated the exhibition.

Prague Quadrennial is the world's largest event in the field of scenography, consisting of a competitive presentation of contemporary work in a variety of performance design disciplines and genres including costume, stage, lighting, sound design, and theater architecture for dance, opera, drama, site-specific, multi-media performances, and performance art.

This year’s edition was held from 08-18 June in three venues in Prague with more than 300 artworks from more than 100 countries. END
