GENEVA 04 July 2023 – The Philippines assured the international community of its commitment and dedication to the shared vision of international cooperation and global responsibility and burden sharing in the area of humanitarian affairs, during the 2023 Economic and Security Council Humanitarian Affairs Segment (ECOSOC HAS) held on 21 to 23 June 2023 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.

Permanent Representative of the Philippine Mission to the UN and Other International Organizations Evan P. Garcia, delivering the Philippines’ national statement during the General Debate, urged governments and all stakeholders to contribute to and be part of the solutions to humanitarian crises. He added that despite challenges brought about by natural disasters and climate change, the Philippines continues to be a donor to humanitarian organizations, country-based pooled funds and emergency appeals, in the spirit of international solidarity.

Permanent Representative Garcia highlighted the need to address root causes of displacement, and to acknowledge the centrality of people and communities when dealing with humanitarian crises. As a country that has witnessed the impacts of devastating typhoons and other natural hazards, he also noted the value of investments in evidence- informed and technology-based solutions in order to enhance disaster risk reduction and resilience.
