PH Ambassador Banners PH Gender-Responsive Climate Action Initiatives in Abu Dhabi Forum Ahead of UAE's COP28 Hosting

ABU DHABI 14 July 2023 — Philippine Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates Alfonso A. Ver cited the Philippines’ gender-responsive climate action initiatives at the "High-Level Panel Discussion on The Gender Dimensions of Climate Change and Gender-Responsive Climate Action" held on 11 July 2023, at the UAE's General Women's Union (GWU) in Abu Dhabi, organized in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the UN Women's Liaison Office for the GCC.

Highlighting that the Philippines is a leading country in terms of gender parity, Ambassador Ver also stated that the country is one of the most vulnerable to climate change, and that the country’s gender-responsive climate action initiatives was only made possible through the Philippine government's strong partnership with all sectors, such as civil society, bilateral and international partners.

He said that the Philippines’ recognition wherein climate action requires wide and extensive collaboration mirrors the UAE's vision for COP28, and that cooperation of all countries and all sectors are needed to bring about urgent transformational progress. He expressed hope that COP28 will bring more opportunities for PH-UAE cooperation on climate change and renewable energy.

This high-level panel discussion is part of the "Climate Change and Gender Equality" Initiative, which was launched under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women's Union (GWU), President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation (FDF), and the UAE's “Mother of the Nation”, in the lead up to UAE's hosting of the UNFCCC COP28 in November this year.

Ambassador Ver was joined at the panel discussion by Ms. Mervat Shelbaya, Head, Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) Secretariat and Director, Inter-Agency Support Branch (IASB) – UNOCHA, Ms. Sarah Shaw, Senior Advisor at COP28 UAE, Ms. Ahlam Al-Lamki of the UAE’s General Women Union and Ambassador Andrea Fontana, Ambassador of the European Union to the UAE.

Her Highness Sheikha Dr. Moza bint Tahnoun bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, as the Adviser at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the event’s main Guest of Honor, met with Ambassador Ver and the rest of the panel to thank them for their participation. Ambassador Ver took the opportunity to express the Philippines' gratitude for the UAE's donation of humanitarian aid in light of the impending eruption of Mayon Volcano, the latest in the UAE's long record of humanitarian assistance to the Philippines.
