Philippine Embassy London Launches “Bugkós: Source Cultures in Diaspora Respond to the Rachel and Clare Tanner Collection” Exhibit

LONDON 25 July 2023 – The Philippine Embassy in London recently launched the exhibit “Bugkós: Source Cultures in Diaspora Respond to the Rachel and Clare Tanner Collection” at Sentro Rizal London.
The exhibit, in collaboration with the Philippine Studies Program at SOAS University of London, features a collection of vintage Philippine clothing and other artifacts which were acquired by Mr. David Tanner, a British national, and his family during their travels around the Philippines from 1975 to 1980, while Mr. Tanner was working for a British multinational corporation. Rachel and Clare, after whom the collection is named, are the Philippines-born daughters of Mr. Tanner and wife Jackie.
In his welcome remarks, Philippine Ambassador to the UK Teodoro L. Locsin, Jr. hailed Mr. Tanner and family’s generosity in bequeathing their collection of Philippine artifacts to the Philippine Government, through the Embassy, for the next generations to appreciate and enjoy.
Aside from the Filipiniana treasures currently on display at Sentro Rizal London, the exhibit launch also featured important aspects of Philippine cultural heritage, such as the Pangalay dance of the Tausugs and the Ballangbang celebratory dance of the Igorots.
