LISBON 02 August 2023 - The Philippine Ambassador to Portugal, Celia Anna M. Feria, together with the Embassy officers and staff, welcomed the 49 Filipino volunteers from the Philippines and other parts of the world, who are set to participate in the World Youth Day  (WYD) 2023 celebrations which takes place from 01 to 06 August 2023 in Lisbon, Portugal.

During the courtesy call, the group, many of whom are veterans of previous WYD celebrations, proudly recalled that the WYD in the Philippines in 1995 still holds the world record for having the largest number of five million participants.  Ambassador Feria said that “the participation of Filipino volunteers, strongly demonstrates the Philippines' profound spiritual values, strong dedication to the Catholic faith, and unwavering support for events that promote peace and unity.”

Ambassador Feria also took the opportunity to remind the volunteers of the significance of their participation in the WYD. “This international gathering of young Catholics serves as a platform for spiritual growth, cultural exchange, and building lifelong connections with the youth from all corners of the world” said Ambassador Feria.

Ambassador Feria underscored the Philippine Embassy's commitment to assist, provide support and extend assistance to all Filipino participants,  pilgrims and volunteers alike, especially to those who may need consular assistance while in Lisbon.

The WYD is a “gathering of young people from all over the world with the Pope” and is held every 3 years in different countries. It draws millions of young Catholics together to celebrate their faith.  It is “ a pilgrimage, a celebration of youth and expression of the universal Church and an intense moment of evangelization for the youth.  Although its Catholic identity is clearly evident, WYD opens its doors to everyone”.

The WYD 2023 events in Lisbon commence with the Opening Mass celebrated by Lisbon Cardinal Manuel Clemente on 01 August 2023 at the  Parque Eduardo VII. The culmination of the celebrations will be the Missioning Mass, presided over by His Holiness, Pope Francis, on 06 August 2023 at the Campo do Graça in Parque Tejo, also in Lisbon.  END
