24 June 2014 - Philippine Ambassador to Mexico Catalino R. Dilem, Jr. and the personnel of the Philippine Embassy in Mexico welcomed School Director Mariano Reyes Escamilla, Sra. Maria Rosa Brenda Galicia, president of the Parent’s Association, and the 13 best performing students from the Escuela Secundaria 87 Republica de Filipinas as they visited the Embassy Chancery in the morning of June 23. The visit was one of the Embassy’s activities related to the commemoration of the 116th anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine Independence.
During the visit, Director Reyes, Sra. Galicia, the parents and the students present, expressed their appreciation for being given the opportunity to be a part of the activities coinciding with the national day celebration organized by the Embassy. The visit gave the students an opportunity to learn more about the history and culture of the country their school is named after.
In Ambassador Dilem’s welcome remarks, he encouraged the students to continue to study diligently to ensure their success in their future endeavors. He also emphasized the value of sacrifice in their academic work and stated the importance of showing respect to their parents, members of their families, elders and colleagues. The Ambassador introduced the officers and staff of the Embassy and gave a brief explanation of their respective functions after which he informed the visitors that the personnel of the Embassy are at their disposal if their services are required.
For his part, Director Reyes said that it was an honor to be invited to the Embassy. He also said that he considered it a privilege for the students of his school to participate in the art workshop conducted by world renowned Filipino painter, Mr. Manuel D. Baldemor who is in Mexico City for his one-man art exhibit, “La Sincronia Filipino-Mexicano” which ended on June 23.
A brief tour of the chancery conducted by Cultural Officer Amelyn E. Julio-Obong showing the Filipiniana items on display at the reception area was received by the students with much enthusiasm. Mr. Baldemor then gave a description of his artworks displayed at the Embassy. This was followed by a 10-minute film documentary showing the best sights the Philippines has to offer. The film, artworks and the handicrafts presented awed the visitors as for most of them this was the first time they have been introduced to materials about the Philippines.
Vice Consul Mikhal C. de Dios then gave a brief talk providing historical and cultural information about the Philippines. The shared identity between the Philippines and Mexico was also discussed by the Vice Consul.
The highlight of the visit was an art workshop conducted by Mr. Baldemor. He sketched several drawings using black ink showing various cultural aspects and landmarks of Mexico as seen from the point of view of a Filipino artist. The sketches were then colored over by the students. After the workshop, the works of art of the students were posted on a board for everyone to see and admire. Certificates of participation issued by Ambassador Dilem and Mr. Baldemor were awarded to the students. END
