HONOLULU 07 September 2023 – The Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu, through its Sentro Rizal, conducted a virtual masterclass on Philippine Folk Dance last September 3. The masterclass is a joint project of the Philippine Consulate, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and Bayanihan, the National Dance Company of the Philippines.

Participants were given the opportunity to enhance their skills and knowledge on Philippine folk dance through instructional videos and live virtual demonstrations from Bayanihan’s Dance Director and Choreographer, Mr. Bong Jose, and the Bayanihan dancers.

Members of Honolulu-based dance groups Tekniqlingz and Dabawenyos, who participated in the masterclass, expressed appreciation for the opportunity to further hone their skills on Philippine folk dances. As mentioned by Consul Durian-Bailon in her remarks, whether one is a beginner or an expert, there's always something new to learn and improve in this art form.

The second and third virtual masterclass sessions will be held this September 9 and 17. During the final session, participants will perform a folk dance as the culminating activity.

Sentro Rizal is the Philippines’ cultural center abroad. With over 30 sites, it aims to promote Filipino arts, culture, and language throughout the world. (END)
