SINGAPORE 27 September 2023 - Art Trek, the annual Filipino art exhibition in Singapore, held the inauguration of its 15th edition with an all-Filipino exhibition, entitled, “In Excess” at the Gajah Gallery in Tanjong Pagar Distripark, a multidisciplinary industrial arts cluster hub.

Curated by Joyce Toh, this is the gallery’s first all-Filipino exhibition with 11 contemporary artists, namely: Victor Balanon; Annie Cabigting; Imelda Cajipe-Endaya; Charlie Co; Louie Cordero; Marina Cruz; Leslie de Chavez; Geraldine Javier; Mark Justiniani; Christina Quisumbing Ramilo; and Maria Jeona Zoleta.

The exhibition delves into the concept of “excess” with all its multifaceted meanings and explores the tensions between its negative and positive connotations. In superlative words and grammar like “sobra” and “napaka”, it points to an adding on and a multiplication: that life lived is one that is always pushing at the edges. This exhibition of Philippine art critiques and celebrates the conundrums, complications and paradoxes of "excess".

Since its inception in 2007, Art Trek, organized by the Philippine Embassy in Singapore, has been a platform for showcasing the works of over 200 Filipino artists, in collaboration with Singapore galleries. This initiative has symbolized the deep-rooted cultural and artistic connections between the two nations.

The exhibition runs until 22 October 2023 at Gajah Gallery’s space on the third floor of the Tanjong Pagar Distripark. END
