NEW YORK 29 September 2023 – Ambassador and Permanent Representative Antonio M. Lagdameo signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Cooperation Arrangement between the Philippines and the United Nations on the support and voluntary contribution of the Philippines to the multi-donor Trust Fund of the Forum for East Asia and Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC) in the amount of USD 10,000 for FY 2023.
The Trust Fund, which was established by the Foreign Ministers of FEALAC, in partnership with the Economic Commission for Latin American Countries (ECLAC) and the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), is geared towards supporting FEALAC-wide projects. These projects are aimed at promoting inter-regional cooperation in key areas such as trade and investment, science, technology, infrastructure, and public policy, aiming to mitigate inequality and fortify social cohesion in the region.
Representing FEALAC during the signing were Executive Secretaries Jose Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs and Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana of the ECLAC and ESCAP, respectively.
In his opening remarks, Ambassador Lagdameo praised the persistent efforts of FEALAC as a multilateral forum promoting enhanced understanding, political and economic dialogue, and cooperation between East Asia and Latin America.
Ambassador Lagdameo emphasized the Philippines' steadfast and active support for FEALAC, stating, “the Philippines is happy to make another contribution in the amount of USD 10,000 to support the work of this Forum, and strengthen our ties with the Member States on various areas of cooperation.”
The event also afforded the Philippines an opportunity to brief FEALAC officials and members on the Philippines’ United Nations Security Council (UNSC) candidature, highlighting the significance of regional support for its candidacy for the 2027-2028 term, with elections scheduled during the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in June 2026.
