Lawmakers from Mexican House of Representatives Establish Mexico-Philippines Friendship Group

MEXICO 09 October 2023- The Philippine Embassy in Mexico led by Ambassador Lilybeth R. Deapera attended the launching of the Mexico-Philippines Friendship Group established by a group of lawmakers from the Mexican House of Representatives on 03 October 2023 at Salon Gilberto Bosques Zaldivar, Camara de Diputados.Representative Carol Antonio Altamirano, President of the Friendship Group, spoke on using legislative tools to advance cooperation and push for national and international agenda for the benefit of both countries who share centuries-long fraternity. 

Representative Antonio further added that Mexico can serve as the entry point for the Philippines in Latin America while underscoring the relationship with the Philippines as its most enduring in Asia. Ambassador Lilybeth R. Deapera in response expressed her gratitude for establishing the Philippine-Mexico Friendship Group. She expressed optimism in strengthening the Philippine-Mexico relations through the said mechanism especially as this year both countries are celebrating the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations.

Representative Alfredo Femat Bañuelos, Chair of Foreign Relations Committee, affirmed the House´s interest in collaborating with the Philippines by noting the unusually high number of Representatives present in the launch as it saw the attendance of at least 12 deputies. He said that the Mexican parliamentarians must have a meeting with their counterparts in the Philippines and put together a work agenda and that through this they can deepen the ties of friendship and collaboration for the 70 years of diplomatic relations between both countries.

Members of the Core Group included Representatives Rosangela Amairany Peña, Ana Karina Rojo Pimentel, Erika de los Angeles Diaz Villalon, Jose Francisco Yunes Zorrilla, Mario Alberto Torres Escudero, Emmanuel Reyes Carmona and Ricardo Aguilar Castillo who noted that the composition of the members is not marked by a particular political color.The Embassy officials and everyone present during the launching were feted with a Oaxacan breakfast immediately after the launch.
