Philippines Advocates for Equitable Geographical Representation and Gender Equality at IAEA Through Unanimously Adopted Resolution
VIENNA 13 October 2023 – The Philippines advocated for gender balance and equitable geographical representation of all International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Member States in its role as the Group of 77 (G-77) penholder of the Resolution on Personnel during the 67th IAEA General Conference.
The Personnel Resolution consisted of two parts: Staffing and Women – each of which underwent weeks of extensive consultations leading up to consensual adoption by all 176 IAEA Member States.
The Philippines has been the penholder for the Personnel Resolution since 2019, drawing from its experience as having a high representation of women in technical and leadership positions not only at the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute but in its various government and non-government institutions relevant to science and technology.
Through the Resolution, the Philippines was able to advocate for closer alignment of the IAEA Secretariat and its programs to the standards for women and geographic representation at the United Nations, and highlight the need to recruit and keep more experts from developing and under-represented countries.END
