VIENNA 13 October 2023 – The Philippines reaffirmed its commitment to the peaceful uses of nuclear energy (PUNE) during its statement delivered at the General Debate of the 67th International Atomic Energy Agency General Conference (67th IAEA GC).

Philippine Ambassador to Austria Evangelina Lourdes A. Bernas delivered updates on ongoing IAEA-backed projects where the Philippines is a leader or active participant. Such projects cover applications of nuclear technology in health and medicine, natural resources and environment protection, food security and agriculture, energy and industry, and human capital development. The role of the Philippines as a champion of gender equality and equitable geographical representation in international fora was also emphasized.

Affirming the work of the Philippines in other forums, particularly the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty Review Cycle, Ambassador Bernas highlighted the nexus between non-proliferation, disarmament and PUNE, emphasizing the co-equal status of PUNE with the first two pillars of the Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
