Philippines Participates in the 61st Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization (AALCO) Session in Bali, Indonesia
BALI 20 October 2023 – At the 61st Session of the Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization (AALCO) currently being held in Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia from 16 to 20 October 2023, the Philippines delivered a statement reaffirming the primacy of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) as the legal framework within which all activities in the oceans and the seas must be carried out and its significant contribution in maintaining international peace and security.
Philippine Ambassador to Indonesia Gina Alagon Jamoralin, Head of the Philippine Delegation, delivered the Philippine statement. In her statement, she expressed the Philippines' appreciation of the support afforded by numerous States and international organizations for the South China Sea (SCS) Arbitration Award and encouraged other States and international organizations, especially Parties to the UNCLOS, to consider publicly expressing its support for the SCS Arbitration Award.
The Philippines emphasized on the instrumental role of the Philippine Arbitral Award on the South China Sea, now on its 7th year anniversary, in providing Asian and African nations lessons and opportunities related to the peaceful resolution of disputes, the protection of maritime rights, and the development of regional cooperation.
Indonesian Minister for Law and Human Rights Prof. Yasonna H. Laoly was elected President for the 61st AALCO Annual Session. Minister for Justice and Correctional Services of South Africa Hon. Ronald Ozzy Lamola was elected as Vice-President for the 61st AALCO Annual Session.
The AALCO serves as an advisory body to its Member States and a forum for Asian-African cooperation on legal matters of common concern. END
