Philippine Investors’ Roadshow in Beijing Attracts Chinese Investors

BEIJING 23 October 2023 – Over 500 participants from more than 40 Chinese business enterprises attended the Philippine Investors’ Roadshow held at Beijing St. Regis Hotel on 27-28 September 2023.
Organized by the Office of the Special Envoy of the President to China on Trade, Investments and Tourism Maynard S. Ngu, in cooperation with the Philippine Embassy in Beijing and the Philippine Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the two-day event aimed to showcase the Philippines as a premier destination for foreign direct investment and a thriving tourism hub in Asia. The event, with sectoral roundtable meetings scheduled on the second day, served as a matchmaking forum where interested investors directly engaged with potential business partners.
Business sectors highlighted at the Roadshow included areas in the fields of renewable energy, telecommunications, transportation, ecozones, agribusiness, and tourism, among others. Philippine Officials and experts from various industries presented and discussed a number of newly implemented policies and laws that significantly promote the ease of doing business in the Philippines.
At the Roadshow’s Opening Ceremony, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. addressed participants through video, inviting Chinese investors to seek opportunities and forge business ties in the Philippines.
In his speech, Philippine Ambassador Jaime A. FlorCruz echoed the invitation from President Marcos and underscored that the business outlook in the Philippines remains bright.
Ambassador FlorCruz remarked, “In the past seven months since I took my role as Ambassador, I have met many Chinese executives. Some of these Chinese businesses are now poised to invest in the Philippines. I hope you all will join them.” He added that the country’s private sector and respective local governments share the national government’s enthusiasm to attract investments from China and other regions.
Speaking at the Opening Ceremony, Senator Francis Joseph “Chiz” G. Escudero acknowledged that both the Philippines and China possess unique assets and resources that can complement each other's economic growth. “By collaborating on various sectors such as trade, investment, and innovation, we can create mutually beneficial opportunities for businesses on both sides. These partnerships can lead to increased job opportunities, economic stability, and ultimately, improved living standards for our citizens,” Senator Escudero emphasized.
Special Envoy Maynard S. Ngu underscored in his speech that the current Philippine administration, under the leadership of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., stands ready to foster a conducive business environment in the country. “The Philippine government places a high priority on the growth of the business sector, recognizing its crucial role in driving economic progress and creating employment opportunities for Filipinos,” Special Envoy Ngu said.
Participating in the Roadshow were various high-level government officials from different Philippine government agencies and institutions; namely, Presidential Adviser on Investment and Economic Affairs Frederick Go; Secretary Ivan John E. Uy [Department of Information and Communications Technology]; Undersecretary Ceferino S. Rodolfo [DTI]; Undersecretary Sharon S. Garin [Department of Energy]; Assistant Secretary Arnel V. De Mesa [Department of Agriculture]; Assistant Secretary Maria Rica C. Bueno [Department of Tourism]; Assistant Secretary Leonel Cray P. Develez [Department of Transportation]; Director General Tereso O. Panga [Philippine Economic Zone Authority]; Deputy Director General Dr. Oscar G. Gutierrez, Jr. [Food and Drug Administration]; Tourism Enterprise Zone Management Sector Head Karen Mae G. Sarinas-Baydo [Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority]; and Special Envoy of the President to China on Trade, Investments and Tourism Benito G. Techico.
The Roadshow was a follow through for promotional trade and investments between the Philippines and China since the State Visit of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to China in January 2023, with both sides highlighting the importance of maintaining and strengthening the positive momentum of bilateral relations. END
