GUANGZHOU 25 October 2023 –The Philippine Consulate General in Guangzhou successfully held the opening of its Textile and Artworks Exhibit on 16 October 2023, which will remain open until 31 October 2023, at its Event Hall for the twin celebrations of this year’s Museums and Galleries Month and National Indigenous Peoples Month.
The Consulate General showcased a triptych art piece made by Filipino visual artists, tribal Filipino weaves and handicrafts, and toy figurines of Filipino mythical creatures and superheroes, all of which left the guests in awe and delight. Guests were also treated to a short animation feature that helped them learn more about Filipino mythical creatures.
In the exhibition’s first two days, Consul General Marshall Louis Alferez interacted with 70 students and teachers from Jinan University and Jingshi Aoyuan Nanao Experimental School, and representatives from tourism, cultural, and art organizations in Guangzhou
In his welcome remarks, Consul General Alferez underscored the importance given by the Philippine Government to promote and protect indigenous culture in the country, and how indigenous culture continued to influence and play a role in mainstream modern Philippine society. He told guests that the exhibition provides “more than a glimpse into the richness of Filipino culture and paves the way for a better understanding of the Filipino people.”
The resounding success of the commemorative event for this year’s Museums and Galleries Month and National Indigenous Peoples Month brought the creative and vibrant world of Filipino woven textiles and art to life before the youth in Guangzhou, one of China’s first-tier cities and the capital of the country’s richest province Guangdong.
Recognizing the valuable educational experience it provided, teachers and representatives from tourism, cultural and art organizations in Guangzhou praised the hosting of the event and expressed keen interest in partnering with the Consulate General in further promoting cultural exchanges and initiatives to deepen people-to-people ties between Filipinos and Chinese.
This is the second activity under the Consulate General’s “Building Better Bridges” program that it launched in May 2023 with local middle school students in commemoration of National Heritage Month. END
