26 June 2014 - As prelude to the forthcoming celebration of the ASEAN Day in August, the ASEAN Dhaka Committee (ADC), composed of Missions from Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, organized a series of sports events that kicked off on May 30 with a 9-hole individual stroke play, followed by matches of table tennis held the next day and a bowling tournament on June 6.
Indonesian Ambassador Iwan Wiranata-atmadja won the golf match held at the Army Golf Club in Dhaka.
In table tennis, teams from the Indonesian Embassy and the Philippine Embassy represented by Ms. Maria Victoria Tambag and Ms. Joany Margallo, won in the playoffs of the men’s and women’s divisions. The event, which was held at the Royal Thai chancery, took on the appearance of a big family get-together when the ASEAN mission members and their families cheered during the friendly matches while enjoying some delicious snacks.
A comradeship of nations set the tone at the Player’s Club at Jamuna Future Park shopping mall when ASEAN diplomats and their families filled the club’s bowling alleys with enthusiasm and team spirit during the bowling tournament. Each team composed of three players from different ASEAN missions. Seven teams played in the men’s division and eight in the ladies’ division. Top three teams with the highest total score won the tournament. Philippine Ambassador to Bangladesh Vicente Vivencio T. Bandillo and Mr. Roy Sorioso of the Philippine Embassy were players of the teams in the men’s division who won the first and third places. Ms. Imelda Lucena, Ms. Marife Soriano-Guba and Ms. Mary Ann Sorioso, also representatives of the Philippine Embassy, were part of the best three teams in the ladies’ division.
The awarding ceremony of the ASEAN sports tournament will be held at the anniversary celebration of ASEAN Day.
The ADC aims to work for the promotion of the best interest of ASEAN-member countries in Bangladesh and with the success of the ASEAN sports activities, it has proven keen to keep its commitments. END
