Intangible Cultural Heritage 1

BEIJING 31 October 2023 – The Philippine Embassy in Beijing participated in the “First Beijing International Week of Intangible Cultural Heritage,” which was held at the National Agricultural Exhibition Center in Beijing from 22 to 25 October 2023.

The Philippine Embassy mounted an exhibit featuring the country’s cloth and mat weaving traditions and contemporary visual arts, with the goal of presenting both the traditional and modern-day expressions of its rich cultural heritage. It consisted of fabrics from the Igorots and indigenous peoples of Mindanao, “banig,” the national attires barong Tagalog and baro’t saya, oil paintings depicting Philippine rural scenes and art pieces by Kristine Lim from her “Kwento ng Alon” series.

For background music, various instrumental songs from the ‘harana’ (serenade) genre were played on loop.

Chinese locals of different ages frequented the booth, taking pictures with and demonstrating keen interest in the Philippine display.

The event, which was open to the general public, sought to facilitate mutual learning of diverse world civilizations through a showcase of intangible cultural heritage. All Chinese provinces and municipalities as well as other Embassies in Beijing also mounted their own exhibits.

This activity forms part of the Philippine Embassy’s cultural diplomacy endeavors to raise awareness about Filipino culture in Beijing. Further, it is in line with the nationwide celebration of the “Museum and Galleries Month (MGM)” in the Philippines this year. END
