Filipino Films Shine at 11th Asian Film Festival in Barcelona

BARCELONA 03 November 2023 – The Philippine Consulate General in Barcelona, represented by the Consul General Maria Theresa S.M. Lazaro, attended the inauguration of the 11th the Asian Film Festival Barcelona (AFFBCN), organized by Casa Asia, running from 25 October 2023 to 05 November 2023.
Six entries from the Philippines are featured in this year’s AFFBCN with Director Joel Lamangan’s “Dangerous Hours” competing in the official section. The other five films are “Abenida” (Dir. Luisito Lagdameo Ignacio, 2022), “About Us But Not About Us” (Dir. Jun Robles Lana, 2022), “The Baseball Player” (Dir. Carlo Obispo, 2022) and “Kargo” (Dri. TM Malones, 2022) both under the NETPAC section, and finally “Kontra Korona” under the Special Section, a film produced by Filipino filmmakers based in Europe.
Casa Asia Director General Javier Parrondo officially opened the Film Festival at the Phenomena Cinema, inviting the public to see as many films as possible from among the 104 participating films from 22 countries of Asia and the Pacific Region. Awards will be given in five different categories/sections: official, panorama, discoveries, NETPAC, and special sections. Jurors from all over the world, including one from the Philippines will be tasked to select the winning films.
AFFBCN continues to be popular among film aficionados in Barcelona as it consistently focuses on narratives that depict conflicts, daily experiences, emotions and other issues prevalent in countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
Consul General Lazaro spoke with Director Parrondo to discuss future collaborations between the Consulate and Casa Asia, specifically in the area of cultural diplomacy.
List of participating Filipino films and their respective schedules and venues are posted on the social media account of the Consulate to encourage members of the Filipino community and other cinema lovers to watch and at the same time support Philippine cinema.
