NEW YORK 13 November 2023 – The Third Committee of the United Nations adopted by consensus the resolution Violence Against Women Migrant Workers which was tabled and facilitated by the Philippines and Indonesia.

Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Antonio M. Lagdameo delivered an introductory statement and presented the resolution that recognizes the immense value of the work of women migrant workers, while seeking to prevent and address the violence, discrimination and harassment that they often experience.

Ambassador Lagdameo highlighted several new elements of the resolution including (i) the role that digital technology may play in increasing the risk of violence faced by women migrant workers, (ii) the need for Member States to establish or strengthen their policies and programmes to provide access to technology and facilitate the training of women migrant workers on digital technology skills, (iii) Member States’ concern that women migrants, including those with irregular migration status, are more likely to be forced to work under deplorable working conditions, and (iv) the importance of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in order to address inequalities that force women to migrate. The resolution calls on Governments to put in place zero-tolerance policies and measures towards all forms of violence and harassment, racism, racial discrimination and related intolerance against migrant women. Ambassador Lagdameo expressed appreciation for the continued trust of the delegations which have co-sponsored and supported the resolution.

The resolution, tabled under the agenda on Advancement of women and which successfully passed the silence procedure, was adopted by consensus by the Third Committee of the United Nations. The resolution is also expected to be adopted by consensus by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2023. END
